Can You Translate Your Own Documents for UKVI?
If your immigration route requires a certified translation, you should not rely on a self-translation. Current Home Office guidance for work routes requires a fully certified translation from a professional translator or translation company that can be independently verified.
Being fluent in both languages does not by itself make an applicant’s own translation a certified professional translation. The purpose of certification is to give the Home Office an independently verifiable translation of the source document.
What a UKVI Translation Normally Needs to Include
The precise wording can differ by route. Current Skilled Worker caseworker guidance requires a professional translation to include:
- confirmation that the translation is accurate;
- the date of translation;
- the full name and signature of the translator or an authorised official of the translation company; and
- contact details for the translator or translation company.
The translation must also be capable of independent verification by the Home Office. Some immigration routes may impose additional requirements, so the route-specific document guidance should always be checked.
Why Self-Translation Is a Problem
- No independent verification: you are both the applicant and the person certifying your own evidence.
- Certification requirements: a route may explicitly require a professional translator or translation company.
- Risk of delay: if the translation does not satisfy the Home Office, you may be asked for a compliant version.
- Document integrity: names, dates, stamps, handwritten notes and marginal text should all be reproduced accurately.
What Should You Do Instead?
- Check the document requirements for your exact visa or immigration route.
- Provide a clear copy of the complete source document to a professional translator or translation company.
- Tell the translator the intended Home Office use and share any written route-specific instructions.
- Check that the certification contains the details required by the relevant guidance.

What About a Friend or Family Member?
A friend or family member should not be assumed acceptable merely because they are bilingual. If they are themselves a professional translator and can satisfy the route’s verification and certification requirements, check the applicable guidance. See our separate guide: can a friend translate documents for UKVI?
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I certify my own translation?
Do not assume so. Where a route requires a certified professional translation, self-certification does not provide the independent professional verification required by the Home Office guidance.
Does every UK visa route use identical wording?
No. Translation requirements should be checked against the current guidance for the exact immigration route.
